Experienced Children’s Protective Services defense lawyers in Michigan are not the only ones who concern themselves with cases involving the improper or illegal treatment of children. In fact, law enforcement officials and legal counsel around the world are on the look out for suspects of child abuse and child neglect, as these cases are not just confined to the United States. For example, headlining news reported recently that police in France arrested a woman for child abuse and manslaughter after allegedly suffocating her eight newborn babies.
Even though 46 year-old Dominique Cortez is a nurse’s aide by profession, it does not mean that she personally enjoys the aspects that come along with it. After a bad experience during her first pregnancy, Cortez vowed to never again see a doctor, even for contraceptives to prevent having additional children. To avoid this experience from reoccurring, Cortez handled each subsequent pregnancy differently. According to police reports, Cortez admitted to delivering eight newborns herself before suffocating them and placing the corpses in plastic bags located throughout the yard of a home owned by her father.
When new owners of the home began to move-in, they immediately noticed two of the plastic bags with newborn corpses locked inside. After questioning by law enforcement officials, Cortez eventually admitted to her actions, pointing police to the garage, where the other six bodies were located. As a result, both Cortez and her husband, Pierre-Marie Cortez, were arrested for criminal charges including child abuse and manslaughter. Cortez awaits psychiatric evaluation while in custody. Her husband has been released but remains under judicial control. Even though Mr. Cortez maintains that he knew nothing of his wife’s pregnancies, he could still be charged with failure to report a crime and concealment of corpses.
Law enforcement officials worldwide are concerned with reported incidents of child abuse or child neglect. Regardless of where the infraction occurred, whether here or overseas, conviction will carry significant consequences for the defendant. Not only could the suspect face termination of parental rights, but significant jail sentences can also result. If accused of child abuse charges in Michigan, it is important to pro-actively seek legal assistance from trustworthy and hard-working Children’s Protective Services defense attorneys. Doing so quickly will ensure that superior legal advice and legal representation are used to defend your personal freedoms and liberties, as well as your family.
